The Voles and I

"Scottish water voles have been found to travel enormous distances, enabling them to persist in fragmented habitats."
"The large rodents travel around bogs, lochs and moors in order to join, or establish, new colonies."

Lured by carrots
art
a studio
apples
the voles and I
have been found
among strangers
in foreign places
joining
or establishing
ourselves
again.

We are shooed from the nest
threshed
by the expectant or distressed
who have hopes of
less drama than we provide.
It is our nature
to perceive the stories in things
and move on
swimming through it
the marshy pond
bogeyman love and
dangerous fields
that prey upon our fears and leave us thinking of enemies and wounds.
We could die from this and that's that.
But
if we are brave and lucky enough
to find the far water
among the rushes
we there
among others
not unlike us
propel ourselves forward
